Early start with trip up Mount Wellington – 1200m above sea level.. Fantastic views over Hobart. Had some trouble restarting the Tiger as the radio tower interfered with the motor electronics so the first half of the trip down Mt Wellington was accompanied by the sound of the alarm system. Called into Jill’s for brekky and then travelled to Port Arthur – a convict penal settlement and scene of mass murder. We then visited the Tasman Arch, Devils Kitchen and Tressellated Steps. Sampled a curried scallop pie – famous in Tassie.- at Richmond. Ended the day with a ride into the Mt Field National Park for an evening at the National Park Hotel. Filled with local characters who can make your hair curl with the language they use and the biggest T-bone steaks you have ever seen in your life!

4th Jan
We rode out to Gordan Dam and then on to Derwent Bridge. We then rode to the West coast of Tasmania through Queenstown- a barren landscape from years of mining, into Strahan – a touristy seaside village and ended with an evening at Zeehan.

5th Jan
The following morning we were very excited to be spending the day riding gravel on a road that is comprised of white silica. A mineral that is sent to Japan to make camera lenses. We first rode to a small town Corinna in which we caught the Fatman’s Barge across the Pieman’s River. We continued on the silica road and found ourselves in the middle of nowhere with a tyre puncture. Luckily I am similar to Bear Grylls action man and could fix it. Good thing I have been carrying around a puncture repair kit. The instructions were glued together so I could only read one page of it. Very handy! People on the road were very helpful and we met an English couple who used to ride a trumpy and a family who assisted us with inflating our tyre so we could continue on our journey to Smithton. As luck would have it, there was a motorcycle store in town with a tyre brought in that morning that fit the tiger. They fitted the tyre immediately and we continued on our way to Stanley to spend the night. We enquired about accommodation at the pub and were told that there was 1 room left with an ensuite. It was recommended we take a look before paying. We inspected the room which was smelly and you could flush the toilet whilst laying in bed – so we decided to seek accommodation elsewhere! We ended up at a lovely cottage across the road from the pub. We caught the chair lift up to “The Nut” a rock formation and watched the sun begin to set before eating dinner at the pub restaurant and retiring for the night.

6th Jan
A few drinks last night meant a later start today. We rode to Burchison Gorge and then to the World Heritage Listed Cradle Mountain. The days are continuing to be sunny and the riding great. Our friend Mick was leaving to go back to the mainland so we rode to Devonport to farewell him before heading into Georgetown. Georgetown is the oldest town in Australia. We had the biggest and juiciest scallops for dinner. Tiger got to sleep over inside at the bar.

7th
The following morning we rode to Bridport, Branxholm Gorge and the seaside tourist town of St Helen’s. We stopped for a beer at the infamous Weldenborough Hotel. It is a hotel perched atop a mountain. There are only a few other buildings around it. The pub has some excellent memorabilia on it’s walls. We continued on to Launceston- a major town with a reputation for good restaurants. The weather was extremely warm. We then rode to Mole Creek and stopped for a beer at the famous “Tiger Bar” before riding into Paradise. Who could resist visiting a town with that name?! We finally found Paradise! We then rode into Devonport to stay at the Formby Hotel. The Tiger got to sleep in the bottleshop. It was a long but very good day of riding which meant we could enjoy a few drinks tonight before a sleep in and a cruisy day tomorrow before heading back to Melbourne on the Spirit of Tasmania.

Cruise on harbour to peppermint bay with stop at Bruny Island. Salmon farms, local produce for lunch, stories about the history of the harbour and islands. Fantastic tour.
Back to the taste festival. More wine. Sensational cheeses and oysters and pizzas in shape of cones. Great band Keshie. Became groupies and me being the shy person I got cd’s signed by the band. Danced the evening away and caught up with Mick.
2nd of Jan we were feeling a little dusty. So went on epicurean wine and food tour which lasted 12 hours organised by Long Lunch tour company. Joining us was Jill and we travelled from Hobart to Freycinet on the east coast sampling cool climate wines and tasting sensational food. Our favourite vineyard was Pooley’s.

All aboard the Spirit of Tasmania! We boarded the ship to travel from Melbourne to Devonport. I was extremely nervous and took anti-nausea tablets and Narelle was extremely excited. Guess who got sick?! We had a cabin to sleep in, a live band and a new friend named Mick who was travelling on his Harley ”FatBob”. We sailed at 9pm and arrived at 6am.
We arrived in Tassie to a beautiful sunny day. We are still wearing thermals. Mick decided to ride with us into Hobart and we took the route via the Great Lakes. Spectacular scenery around every curve. “The best motorbike ride I have ever done” were the words used frequently.
We arrived in Hobart to meet up with friends Brad & Verity and Jill at the Taste Festival on the marina . The festival showcases the best wine & Food in Tasmania. We were fortunate to see some boats still arriving in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. A few glasses of wine and we moved on to some local pubs and chatted with some locals. Back to the Taste Festival to celebrate new years eve or old years day. We decided to go back to our accommodation to watch the fireworks and took our chairs onto the middle of the road for the best view of the fireworks. We wished passing cars a “happy new year” until the police decided we were a traffic hazard and moved us to the footpath.

Staying overnight at Kris, Narelle’s sister was great. We left early to ride the Great Ocean Road which is one of the most magnificent motorbike roads around. It includes great views and great bends. The only thing that was disappointing was the terrible traffic as it is holiday seasons here and there was just bumper to bumper and no way to even get up to legal speed to say the least.

We stopped at the Twelve Apostles and admired the views of limestone rocks in the ocean. Mother nature has done great work.
The Great Ocean Road goes from Torquay to Warnambool and takes all day to really appreciate all the scenery. We stopped overnight at Peterborough in a small hotel/motel that was named after a shipwreck – the “Schomberg”. Chatted with the publican and a couple of other travelers and thoroughly enjoyed their company.

Today we rode back to Melbourne via an inland road through Colac. We recommend a stop at the Country Food Store as the food and prices were fantastic!

It seems that days fly by in a trip like this and you do not get time every day to do your blogs. We stayed over night in Cann River Hotel which was a great country pub with very friendly staff. The pub is like most others old and worn out but was clean and biker friendly allowing all bikes to be kept in the Beer Garden overnight. We met some other bikers from Melbourne which where doing the snowy mountains the following days.

The trip from Cann River to Toora was the most coldest ever with temperatures struggling to go past 15 deg/C. Despite wearing 5 layers of clothes it was not enough to keep us warm and to make it even worse we had rain along the way. Along the way we stopped at a small place called Woodside. It consisted of a pub and a petrol station only and we stopped at both. The pub was great and warm. We ordered warm food and coffee but with the Coffee machine broken Narelle had to walk across the street to the gas station to buy a coffee. Asked what type of coffee she wanted she asked for 2 short blacks only to be told that the only choice was Nescafe with or with out milk. Good stuff. We stayed at the pub for a while to warm up and chatted to staff and locals which where good characters. Locals could easily be spotted as they wore shorts and singlets.

The original plan was to check in at the pub in Toora and then go to Wilsons Promontory but due the extreme cold, the day was cut short when we arrived to the hotel. The afternoon was spent trying to warm up with cold wine and beers. Good but cold afternoon.

The following morning started with a ride out to Wilsons Promontory, the most southern point of Australia’s mainland. It is national parkland and bordered by ocean. We visited Whiskey Beach and Squeaky Beach – which does squeak even when wearing motorbike boots! The sand is pure white and the rocks red. Amazing. Lots of surfers catching waves also.

Back on the motorbike with a ride into Melbourne. The temperature was slightly warmer and the sun came out. We are still wearing thermals however.

We will add photos of these 2 days soon as still sorting out the sizing on the GINFAN picture Gallery. Photos will still be on Facebook

It was a sunny and warm start to the day. Perfect conditions for a bike ride. We decided to change our planned route and go inland to avoid traffic on the coast. The new plan involved a back road towards Canberra through a place called Braidwood and included couple of gravel roads. It is the perfect bike riders road with both bendy curves and fantastic sceneries. This is a route which we would not have thought of unless for the advice of Tony, Narelle’s relative. After this we went through the snowy mountains through the Great Dividing range to Cooma with magnificent landscape in spite of the weather changing suddenly from Sunny and warm to rainy and cold leaving no warning to change to our raingear. Despite of my belief of my motorbike pants being waterproof I was proven wrong resulting m e getting soaked and all the rainwater flowing into my boots. Riding down the Monaro Highway through state forests was certainly worth the scenery. We have travelled through 3 states today – NSW, ACT & VIC. A warm shower and cold beer is a good end to the day.

Travelled down the highway & through Sydney and then decided to cross the Sea cliff Bridge near Scarborough and what an amazing architectural feature where the bridge is built along the cliffs with great view s of the coast . I’ve heard and read about this bridge few times but did not know where it was until today. Then on to Gerringong on NSW south coast for Chrissy celebrations with Narelle’s relatives. Lots of cross cultural festivities. Icelandic schnapps, rye bread, herring, gravlax, oysters, prawns, roast pork, ham , pudding and some very fine wine and beer was enjoyed by all. The highlight of the day must though have been when I was showed to my bedroom and found out that I was sleeping in the same room as my lovely Tiger. What a great end of a great day;)

Well, first couple days of this trip have been a bit strange with heavy rains along every part of the trip. Day Zero as I call it was just to go from Gold Coast to Brisbane for work for an hour or so and have a Xmas morning tea with the team where after I rode down to Coffs including heavy showers. The trip really started this morning with even heavier showers early morning making it very difficult to leave. It took a while to get everything on the bike and even longer to put all rain gear on our selfs resulting to us overheating before we even left.

The route was through Bellingen, Dorrigo and there inland to Armidale, Walcha and Barrington. It rained most of the way with fog resulting to a very slow ride with bad visibilities through the mountain range. This route would be a great ride during a reasonable sunny day but low visibility reduced the pleasure of the ride. It took great concentration to stay alert and on the road. Eventually after coming down the mountain range after full on rain dress and cold weather it cleared and the last hour was warm and sunny with blue skies. Thankfully during a day like this my wonderful bike has heated handgrips. which even come handy during summer time in Australia.

So far we have done just over 1,000km of the intended 8,500km

This Christmas the plan is to ride my motorbike from Brisbane through Snowy Mountains and the hinterlands of Victoria and then sail to Tasmania. My goof friend Rob Eaton has been helping me out setting up the webpage so that I can use the Google maps for blogging and adding pictures and possibly videos for each leg of the trip. This part shows the route from Coffs Harbour to Melbourne. the most interesting rides will be on the way back but during these 22 days on the bike I will be riding just under 9,000km or about 3 times around Iceland, my home country
